The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Application Process

There is a lot of information to keep track of when considering Public Service Loan Forgiveness. 

However, the authorities behind Public Service Loan Forgiveness have provided a number of resources available designed to help guide you through the process and keep you updated with any necessary information.

Follow the steps below to get started on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness application process when it comes out sometime before October 2017, which is the earliest any borrower is able to qualify for loan forgiveness.

  1. Fill out the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Employment Certification form, and have your employer fill out their part. It is usually smart to fill and submit this form each year, and anytime that you change jobs to ensure that you are on the right track. 120 qualifying payments can come across a lot of time, and the form lets authorities tell you if you are on the right track.
  1. Submit the form to FedLoan Servicing (PHEAA). The form is reviewed to ensure that your employment makes you eligible for Public Service Loan ForgivenessYou will have a chance to give any other information if needed. Sometimes, a W-2 or other paperwork is required if your eligibility is unclear.
  1. Once you are cleared as eligible, your loans owned by the U.S Department of Education go over to Public Service Loan Forgiveness, who will then inform you as to the number of qualifying payments you have made already. You should hold on to all documents throughout the process and keep careful track of information that supports qualifying employment (tax forms, pay stubs, etc.).
  1. Processing times will vary, but if you are denied, you will be informed as to the reason.
